Hanologue: Letter to the Editor: A Different View On The Girly Men Controversy

January 28th, 2010

I usually avoid reading The Aggie because I find that most of the columnists never really stray from popular college student view points and the other articles feel like they have a lot of depth missing. I never would have heard about the “Girly Men” controversy had it not been for Davis Wiki. I personally think that you were too hasty in making the decision to retract the article for alleged intolerance. A girl merely stated that she preferred her men to not spend so much time on hair and clothes and a few LGBT groups on campus decided that she was intolerant. As far as I know, she has never sent out any hate mail or harassed people for the way they live. The only ones doing the harassing and sending the hate mail were the ones who were calling her intolerant. I see some irony there. By retracting this article and being apologetic to a group that gets their underwear in a bunch over the slightest provocation, you have weakened the already deficient diversity of thought in The Aggie.  Sure, you may get people angry, but that is what happens when you bring something new to the table.

Hanologue: Tobacco and Totalitarianism

September 29th, 2009

Ontario filed a lawsuit against tobacco companies seeking compensation for damages caused by healthcare costs from smoking. What is next? Fast food? I think I should sue fast food companies. Because of their tasty burgers, I am unable to become a world class bodybuilder because I am unable to cut properly. I am too addicted to their food and therefore unable to make millions endorsing products as a professional athlete of some kind. Nevermind that Chad Johnson (wide receiver for Cincinatti Bengals) basically lives off of Big Macs.

If Ontario wants to be compensated for healthcare costs arising from smoking, they should get their money from those who voluntarily decide to smoke. The tobacco companies are not forcing the good citizens of Ontario to smoke, they are just offering a product that one can voluntarily consume. If there is a demand for it, why not? Stop attacking the politically easy target and provide rewards to those who do not smoke. With an incentive to quit, people would most likely quit. If you just punish the tobacco companies, people will just keep smoking and the problem will never be solved. Of course, if this train of though leads to tobacco being taxed, then that means a national healthcare system will lead to a totalitarian government that will regulate your every action.

Hanologue: The New Anti-Tobacco Law is the Anti-Life Equation

June 22nd, 2009

Today Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which allows the FDA to regulate the marketing and manufacturing of tobacco products. The act also bans flavored cigarettes. While the law does not completely ban cigarettes and may make sense to many as being against tobacco is hip, it is a serious infringement on our liberties (we can argue about the significance of damage caused by cigarettes some other time).

From time to time, liberals reinforce the stereotype that they will not do anything unless they have a gun pointed at their head (or a law forces them to do something, but not much difference in my opinion). This stereotype is especially reinforced when they start blaming McDonald’s for making people fat or the fact that liberals prefer to pay higher taxes rather than donate to charities which is the opposite of what conservatives prefer (see Arthur Brooks’ Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism). The legislation that Obama just signed into law is another example of their need for a gun pointed at their heads. Cigarette companies are not forcing you to smoke and McDonald’s is not shoving Big Macs down your throat. And if you need a huge label to tell you that inhaling smoke might not be the most healthiest thing in the world then cigarettes are probably the least of your worries. Sure, if we ban smoking or fast food, we might be closer to a healthy and happy utopian society, but at what cost?

In the DC Universe, a New God named Orion learns the Anti-Life Equation, which eliminates free will (the name comes from the fact that you are not really alive if someone possesses absolute control over you). He decides to use the equation to create a utopian society by forcing everyone to be happy and good but in the end learns that free will is too important to be eliminated. Regulating fast food and cigarettes as well as increasing taxes for inefficient welfare programs is the government forcing us to be good. The government is essentially using the Anti-Life Equation on us. Unfortunately for us, the government will never learn the importance of free will like Orion did. It may only be cigarettes now, but there are plenty of other products that many of us enjoy in moderation that some abuse. Even if you are against cigarettes, supporting government regulation of them means you are suppressing someone else’s free will. Just wait until something you enjoy is taken away.

I know I heavily bashed liberals on the fact that they are enforcing social behavior. Religious right-wingers support laws that enforce social behavior as well but they do so not to motivate themselves (they already follow their religious teachings). Instead, they do so because saving babies and straight marriages are a part of their religion. No way am I actually supporting them, I am just explaining why I am more annoyed when liberals enforce social behaviors because they do so in order to push themselves to stop stuffing their face with fries or they want the law to help them quit smoking (Obama is a smoker). Why should I suffer because you cannot find the energy to get off your couch and go out for a walk? If you want motivation, should the fact that you will live a healthier life not be enough? How about being able to watch your children grow up? There are so many better ways to motivate yourself, why get the law to do it?

Hanologue: Playing Politics

May 30th, 2009

Whenever people start disagreeing with Obama, he starts whining about the other side playing politics:

“There are, of course, some in Washington who are attempting to draw old battle lines and playing the usual political games.”

Do you know what I equate this to? The unskilled and bitter Magic: the Gathering players who complain about losing to the dominating competitive Standard deck (currently five color control). Of course we conservatives are going to disagree with Obama and try to stop him from bringing about change that we are against. That is the whole point of politics, to shape or keep the government the way you see fit. This whining of course is not going to change our minds or make Obama’s policies effective, our president is just gathering up reasons to give when his policies completely screw Americans over. In Magic: the Gathering, if you keep losing against the current dominating Standard deck, just giving the excuse that such a deck is unfair and unoriginal will not bring you success in the game. What will bring you success is going back and changing your own deck so that it is able to answer to a variety of threats properly. I would also highly suggest keeping a sideboard as well. If you do not want to do so, you might as well just play casually or quit. Of course, I doubt Obama will ever use my suggestions, probably because he does not play Magic: the Gathering… or read this blog.

Han-Sense: America Should Ban Guns as Well

May 10th, 2009

Look at what banning guns for police officers in Britain has done:

Buff Cop

“Gary – standing at 6′3″ – dwarfs other officers on the beat and admits his physique is definitely an asset for tackling trouble-makers – helping him collar thousands of crooks in his career so far.”

Because Britain does not allow officers to carry firearms (they have to call in a special unit for that), their officers had to adapt. They adapted by becoming powerful super-cops! We as Americans cannot fall behind!
